When we intake rescues into our foster network, they receive a package of basic services. Most of the rescues we intake require much more. For example, in July 2023, PPAH embarked upon an outdoor hoarding cat escue project like we hadn't seen in a while. In a span of two short weeks, we worked to secure foster homes, wellness visits, and spay/neuter appointments for more than 30 cats. Most of the cats we rescued were suffering from infected eyes, ears, skin, and rear ends caused by chronic diarrhea. Leo was diagnosed with and is being treated for a seizure disorder, Cremi had to have an eye removed, and 1 poor boy was too ill to save, the list of medical concerns goes on.
What exactly was the situation for these cats? The owner of the cats originally said he had about 30-40 cats in his apartment. An upstairs neighbor said that was incorrect. That in fact he had about 80 cats in his apartment when he was threatened by his landlord with eviction if he didn’t get rid of all of them. He did what he may have seen as his only option and he put all of the cats outside. Because of this, all cats remained on the property. These cats were not "indoor-outdoor" cats. They were indoor only cats who were terrified and unable to fend for themselves. By the time PPAH came to the scene, the majority of them were underweight and extremely sick. The property was infested with sick cats, feces, urine, vomit, maggots, flies. The smell when walking up to the home was unimaginable. The landlord hired maintenance workers to completely hose down the property with bleach while the cats were still living there. This caused some of the cats to scatter out into the neighborhood and alleys. Our hearts continue to break for these innocent little creatures pushed outside to fend for themselves.
Overall, these cats are a happy, social bunch and have responded well to their foster families. With your help, we can ensure that the cats from this project remaining in our care receive the medical intervention they need in order to be ready for their forever home. Your donation also allows us to continue taking on projects like this in the future and impacting our community. Please donate today to help rehabilitate and find forever homes for gorgeous cats like these and other animals in need. They deserve it!
